With a 90% voter turnout in the two election sessions, the REN21 community has placed its trust in Méndez to lead the organization at a key moment for the global energy transition.

Méndez, recognized for his role in the change in Uruguay’s energy matrix, has been a reference in the development of sustainable policies and in the promotion of an inclusive approach in the transition to clean energy. As Executive Director of Ivy, an organization dedicated to promoting the energy transition in the countries of the global south, he has worked to demonstrate that renewable energies can be an engine of development for all, taking the Uruguayan model to more than 7 countries in the global south.

“Years ago I made the decision to dedicate my life to the energy transition. I did so because I am convinced that there is no other option: we need to change the way we produce and consume if we want a prosperous and inclusive economy on a livable planet. In Uruguay, we are promoting an energy transition model that is now recognized as an unavoidable reference at a global level. But there is still a long way to go. Therefore, assuming the presidency of REN21 is not only an honor, but also a great responsibility. This is a key moment to accelerate the shift to clean energy. From REN21, we will work with its member organizations to make renewables the basis for sustainable development.said Méndez after his appointment.

REN21, founded in 2004, is a worldwide reference network that includes among its more than 100 member organizations governments, international organizations, chambers of commerce and renewable energy experts. Its mission is to provide evidence-based information and facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders to accelerate the energy transformation.

Méndez’s leadership in REN21 reinforces Latin America’s role in the global transition and opens new opportunities to strengthen international cooperation in renewable energy.

About REN21

REN21 is the leading global organization promoting renewable energy and energy transition.
