The world is in the midst of an unprecedented energy crisis, where the security of access to energy and the cost at which it is accessed are of growing concern, with a strong impact on the economies of most countries. This situation is particularly problematic in a context in which the commitments made in relation to climate change and energy transition are not progressing at the necessary pace.

The conference was opened by the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, and was attended by 60 high-level representatives: government ministers, managers of the world’s leading energy companies, United Nations agencies, multilateral and private banks, as well as experts and leading voices from the renewable energy sector. The representatives discussed, in front of a large audience, the role that renewable energies and energy transition can play in this special situation.

At SPIREC, the Uruguayan process was especially considered a success story to be taken as an example. Dr. Ramón Méndez was the only Latin American to be invited to speak at the SPIREC plenary sessions, also participating in other round tables. In these instances, he showed the advantages of having an almost 100% renewable electricity system such as the Uruguayan one: relying exclusively on its own energy instead of having to import the inputs to generate electricity; having predictability in energy costs as it has become independent from the fluctuations of the prices of energy commodities; having reduced generation costs given that nowadays renewable energies are the cheapest ones. As noted at the conference, thanks to its energy transition, the Uruguayan economy did not suffer the impact of the war like most countries in the world.

SPIREC also highlighted the fact that the Uruguayan energy transition generated 50,000 jobs and that the process had a spillover of more than US$ 2 billion on the local economy.

Asked about his contribution to the energy transition in other countries in the region, Méndez highlighted a recent work carried out by the Ivy Association for the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), which identified the barriers to the introduction of renewable energies in Latin America and produced a guide to help countries in the region build their own roadmap for a just energy transition.

Ramón Méndez took the Uruguayan experience to the International Conference on Renewable Energies held this year in Madrid (Spain) from February 20 to 23, organized by the Spanish government and REN21, the world’s leading institution in the field of renewable energies.

[76

post-3102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en
["GET
