Ivy drives Colombia’s energy transition to a sustainable future with innovative solutions and technical advice
At Ivy, in keeping with our commitment to accelerate Latin America’s path towards a sustainable energy transition model for the 21st century, we have been actively working with the Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) since the end of 2023. In this process, we have contributed our experience to help the country transform its energy matrix, focusing on the integration of renewable energies such as solar and wind power, with the aim of reducing dependence on fossil fuels, especially coal, in electricity generation.
Colombia faces the challenge of incorporating intermittent renewable energy sources into its electricity system in a safe and reliable manner. To this end, the MME has requested Ivy’s support to obtain solid technical data and optimization tools to facilitate strategic decision-making and foster a development model that promotes a high participation of renewable energies in the energy matrix, without compromising the security of electricity supply.
An advanced simulation for energy transition
One of the main achievements of this collaboration has been the realization of an advanced simulation using the expansion and operation model of Uruguay’s electricity system, specifically designed to manage high levels of renewable energies. This model was adapted to the Colombian system, which made it possible to simulate the operation of the electrical system with high percentages of renewable energies, especially solar and wind.
The results of the analysis showed that the Colombian electricity system can operate reliably without coal plants, achieving an optimal expansion model that includes a high penetration of renewable sources. This study supports the viability of an energy transition in Colombia, showing that an energy system based on clean energy is not only possible, but also efficient and sustainable.
Collaboration and ongoing support
In addition to the simulations, Ivy has worked closely with the MME to share best practices and successful experiences from other countries in the region, especially regarding the involvement of key stakeholders in change management. This approach has been crucial to ensure that the transition to a cleaner electricity system is inclusive and effective.
“At Ivy, we firmly believe in Colombia’s potential to lead the energy transition in Latin America. Through this joint work with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, we have demonstrated that the integration of renewable energies is not only viable, but can also improve the stability and efficiency of the country’s electricity system,” said Ramón Méndez. “Our goal is to support Colombia in building a more sustainable and resilient energy future.”
Commitment to a just energy transition
Ivy’s work is aligned with the association’s mission to promote a just, inclusive and equitable energy transition in Latin America. This effort not only seeks to improve the sustainability and security of energy supply, but also to promote a low-carbon economy and improve the competitiveness of the electricity sector.
With this project, Colombia continues to move towards the transformation of its energy matrix, reducing its carbon footprint and ensuring fairer and more sustainable access to energy for its citizens.
