Green solution to the crisis

“The way we treat our rivers, forests and wildlife can make us much more vulnerable to catastrophes such as the coronavirus: a healthy and respected nature would eliminate many problems so that we don’t look the same or worse in a few years”, begins Jonathan Gómez Cantero ‘s article for Ethic magazine.

Gómez Cantero warns that “other economic crises in the past have only had a temporary effect on emissions and, once they were over, engines went back to burning oil and its derivatives. A few days ago, several countries called for a green exit from the coronavirus crisis that maintains environmental commitments. Unfortunately, this is not the general rule: The United States and China are downgrading their environmental controls, prioritizing unsustainable economics. Perhaps now could be the perfect time to learn from our past mistakes and emerge from the health crisis, but also from the climate crisis. Both have claimed thousands of lives and are capable of calling our society into question, reminding us of the oft-used but little-applied phrase that “the planet is not an inheritance from our parents, but a loan from our children”.

We can think of a sustainable economy, clean energies and a protection of the natural environment and climate that will allow us to continue living with security and peace of mind. We know the problem and also the solution. We must not forget that we are just another species that also depends on the ecosystem that surrounds it. Even the most microscopic element can play a trick on us.
