International media highlight energy transition in Uruguay

This week DW and the New York Times published articles highlighting the Uruguayan energy transition process.

In the first case(https://p.dw.com/p/4HjvW) the reality of Germany is compared with that of Uruguay, “in Germany, the expansion of wind energy is not progressing, endangering the energy transition. Uruguay, however, is almost completely independent of fossil fuel and could be an example to follow”, to then describe the two realities and highlight the origins and agreements around a public policy that ended up putting Uruguay at the top of the world, and in this case “the envy of Germany”.

In 2008, Uruguay’s “Energy Policy 2005-2030” was drawn up, a plan that was ridiculed by many at first, but to which all parties committed themselves. Today, 98 % of Uruguay’s electricity comes from renewable sources, led by wind power at 40 %, followed by hydroelectric, biomass and solar energy.

This issue was also addressed by the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/05/magazine/uruguay-renewable-energy.html), which gave Uruguay as an example, not only for its achievements in the transformation, but also for its courage in addressing “the main challenge facing humanity, to reduce emissions without falling into pre-industrial poverty”, the article states “A small country is leading the way”.
