One year working for sustainable transition in Latin America

The Ivy Association began its formal operation in August 2020. In our first year, in the midst of a global health crisis, we carried out a diverse set of activities in service of our founding objective: that Latin America accelerate its path towards a new model of sustainable transition for the 21st century, contributing to the necessary global transformation.

  1. Boosting renewable energies in Latin America and the Caribbean

Based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ivy Association and the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) to cooperate in the energy transition, we carried out an extensive diagnosis of the situation of renewable energies in the region and proposed a strategy that would allow countries to increase their ambition in relation to the introduction of renewable generation and cooperation agencies to have a unified regional agenda to promote this process.

This work, carried out between June and November 2020, jointly for OLADE and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with the objective of supporting the RELAC initiative. It allowed interaction with a wide range of public and private stakeholders from 24 countries in the region. The conclusions were presented, among other occasions, at the OLADE Annual Meeting of Energy Ministers on November 17, 2020.

  1. Promoting climate action in national governments

Between November and December 2020, with the support of GTZ, the National Secretariat for Climate Change and Sustainable Development of Argentina was accompanied in the preparation of the second Review of the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC). To this end, opportunities, barriers, needs and information gaps were assessed for the design and implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, together with their corresponding means of implementation.

  1. Promoting climate action in subnational governments

In conjunction with the Fundación Modelo de las Islas Canarias, Spain, we worked on the generation of Climate Strategies and Action Plans for subnational governments, with funding from the Canary Islands Cooperation Agency. To this end, a methodology was developed based on a pilot experience involving the government of the Department of Canelones, in Uruguay, and the government of the Municipality of Candelaria, in the Canary Islands. This methodology was used to design the first Climate Strategy of Canelones and the first Climate Action Plan of Candelaria, both of which are currently in the approval phase. The methodology designed for, and tested in, this work can be taken to other subnational governments in Latin America.

  1. Promoting sustainable development in subnational governments

Our Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mercociudades Network, which is made up of 361 local governments and 3 states and provinces of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, where more than 120 million people live. The objective of this Agreement is to complement our respective technical capacities to collaborate in: climate change adaptation, resilience, monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals, sustainable mobility, sustainable territorial planning, waste management and circular economy.

Based on this Agreement, we have assisted Mercociudades in some specific activities. In particular, we have participated in its School of Resilience, not only as speakers but also as moderators of the round tables to identify challenges and opportunities related to the topic.

  1. Seminars and instances of collective reflection

Already in its first year of life, Ivy has generated and participated in several webinars and various instances that allowed a collective reflection on sustainable transition.
